Album review: Mozart: Piano Concerto No. 27 & Symphony No. 2902 Aug 2025

“Against any other recording of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 27, this live, spatial one with pianist Garrick Ohlsson at Severance Music Center – available Aug. 1 on Apple Classical and Sept. 12 on other platforms – surely holds its own.

Indeed, with this recording, Ohlsson, Welser-Most, and the orchestra accomplish a rare feat, underscoring Mozart’s potent economy of expression, his matchless way of saying everything while saying little. Few other performances in this listener’s memory have evoked such an appreciation for the way Mozart, in his last concerto, distilled the form to its essence, to an even dialogue between soloist and ensemble.

Ohlsson’s virtuosity here isn’t speed or extremes of technique but rather exceptional clarity. Even where the composer turns playful, as in the third movement, the pianist retains his stunning equanimity, allowing not so much as a single measure to sound muddy or hurried.

The orchestra is right there with him, too. In the second movement, Welser-Most and the ensemble join Ohlsson in an idyllic, latently emotional reverie, and in the third, the only audible tension between the two parties seems to lie in who can enjoy themselves more thoroughly. In sum, it’s Mozart of the purest, most elegant variety.”
