Mr. Ohlsson performs with the Takács Quartet at the Tanglewood Festival
Mr. Ohlsson performs in five concerts at the prestigious Tanglewood Music Festival in Lenox, Massachusetts on July 26. Honored as the Tanglewood 2017 Koussevitzky Artist, he first performance is with the world-renowned Takács Quartet. The Tanglewood Festival was founded in 1936 as the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and has a long tradition of inviting prestigious artists from around the world to participate in this music festival. This year Mr. Ohlsson and the Takács Quartet will perform Elgar’s Piano Quintet in A minor, Op. 84. This is not their first time performing this piece together; in March of this year Mr. Ohlsson and the quartet performed this piece at the Modlin Arts Center in Richmond, Virginia. The Richmond Times-Dispatch commented, “The pianist, who produced massive sonorities in the Liszt program he played four years ago at UR, was more selectively muscular this time, giving Elgar’s big keyboard declarations their due but otherwise maintaining fine balance with the strings.” Composed in 1918, Gramophone magazine commented of Elgar’s masterpiece, “It is big chamber music, with at times an almost orchestral sonority to it…” The Quartet will also perform Haydn’s String Quartet No. 27 and Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 13.
